Exposing The Ways Dirt & Dust Can Enter Your Home

Dusting is an easy way to keep your home looking great and smelling nice. It is also a great way to keep allergens, dirt, dander and pollen from resting on the surfaces of your home. Dusting is a time-consuming task, but it is important to dust frequently for your family’s health. (This is especially true during pollen season).

How to keep dust from building up inside the home

  1. Keep the windows closed until the spring pollen is gone. The springtime air is so nice this time of year but remember that pollen is flying around and can easily blow inside when the windows are open. This adds to the dust in your home. Pollen will settle on bed linens, kitchen counters, dressers, and more. Keep your windows and doors closed until pollen season is over…OR…open them only when it is wet outside just after a rain shower.
  2. Change your bedding once a week. It makes the whole room smell fresh, and you will sleep better on fresh, clean sheets. Changing your sheets will cut down on dust mites. This is something you should do 1x per week, to keep your bedding fresh.
  3. Vacuum your mattress and throw your pillows in the dryer. Dust mites love to make themselves at home in your pillows, sheets, and mattress. Change/wash your bed linens & vacuum the dust mites from your entire mattress. Then, toss your pillows into the dryer for 10 minutes to KILL the dust mites. These critters are unhealthy because they leave behind their feces (GROSS) and can irritate your lungs and skin. Taking the time to vacuum your mattress will also prolong its life by reducing the weight that is caused by accumulating dust mites & your own body dander.
  4. Take your shoes off when coming inside the home. We walk across a lot of places every day (think gas stations, Home Depot, dog parks) and we carry those germs back home on our shoes. You can keep the dirt and germs from spreading inside if you take your shoes off at the door. Consider adding a shoe tray or shoe shelf beside the door to encourage people to place their shoes aside when they come in.
  5. Get Rid of Floor Clutter. Going through the piles of things on the floor and moving them or donating them will also help cut back on places for dust to pile up. After moving the items from the floor, take the rugs outside and shake them off, then vacuum them to get rid of the dirt inside the fibers. Lastly, sweep and mop the floor to pick up all dirt and dander that was under the rugs or along the baseboards.

If you aren’t able to do these tasks because of physical limitations or lack of time, call a maid service like Maid In America to help you! Keeping the floors clean is a big way to keep the home healthier and to keep your whole home fresh and clean.

  1. Clean Your Home from Top to Bottom. Ask yourself: “When was the last time I did a deep cleaning?” To start, move everything from the counters, the bookshelves, and the furniture tops, and then dust and clean the surfaces. Get every surface cleaned before adding back the items. You will also want to mop and vacuum the floor and clean the bathrooms, as well. Your home will shine and smell amazing too!
  2. Consider getting an air purifier. An air purifier can clean the air and pick up allergens in the air. If you suffer from allergies, this is a great way to control the dust and pollen inside your home. After cleaning your home thoroughly, plug in your air purifier and feel how light the air is after an air purifier runs for about an hour. Getting a good one will cost around $250- 400, but you will notice the difference in the air, for sure! If you need a new vacuum, check out the Rainbow vacuum which is also an air purifier.
